Update On iOS 5.1 Untethered Jailbreak For Apple iPhone, iPad & iPod touch

It seems like only yesterday that the jailbreak dream team dropped the good news by announcing the release of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 that would bring liberation and freedom to those who were using an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 powered by Apple’s A5 chip. It was in fact over eight weeks ago and although it was a huge accomplishment by all involved to release the Absinthe jailbreak, the community is once again focusing all eyes on the development teams hoping for a jailbreak which covers iOS 5.1.

Jailbreaking May Soon Become Illegal Again, Act Now To Help Keep It Legal

It was in July 2010, the United States government ruled that the jailbreaking and unlocking of Apple iPhone, as well as the rooting of Android devices was to be deemed a legal act, as long as the process wasn’t being carried out with the intention of circumventing copyright. We ran with an article directly after the ruling was made which outlined the full details of the new DMCA legislation which once and for all set to rest the misconceptions surrounding the legalities of jailbreaking a device.

Obviously, the court’s decision to rule the act of jailbreaking as entirely legal was a major blow for Apple, considering they have invested so much time and money into making their devices and operating systems as secure as possible, and have always been public advocates for making jailbreaking an unlawful act. Apple understandably remained tight lipped on the situation at the time, choosing to make a short statement, which drew attention to the fact that jailbreaking, whilst officially legal, would still void any official Apple arranties:
Apple’s goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As

Jailbreak Apple iPhone 4S And iPad 2 On Windows The Easy Way Using Absinthe [VIDEO]

Yesterday was a rogue day for the jailbreaking community when they were blessed with the first-ever iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak. Two separate tools were released for jailbreaking A5-based devices, one was Absinthe for Mac by the Chronic Dev Team, and the other one, which was a command line-based tool for both Windows and Mac users by the iPhone Dev Team.

Absinthe, which comes to us from the creators of the original GreenPois0n tool, is probably one of the the simplest one-click jailbreaking tool that we’ve come across in recent times. You really don’t have to do much except for clicking one “Jailbreak” button to jailbreak the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, but it was limited to Mac users only, until now.

The Chronic Dev Team has been working their heads off for the release of the Windows version of Absinthe, and as promised, it is now available for download.
Just like its Mac counterpart, its simple to use and it does what it should, that is to provide you with an untethered jailbreak for your iPhone 4S and iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1.

Keep in mind that Absinthe is no way an unlocking tool and is solely meant for jailbreaking your A5-based iOS devices in hand, namely, the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. We’ve emphasized on this point in previous posts before that those looking forward to unlock their iPhone 4S should stay on iOS 5 and should not in any case update to iOS 5.0.1. If you have updated to iOS 5.0.1, unfortunately, then you’re out of luck for any upcoming software-based unlock for the time being. At this point in time, Apple is also not signing the original release of iOS 5 which was released alongside the iPhone 4S to the public, therefore a downgrade to iOS 5 from iOS 5.0.1 is also not possible.
The release of the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S has opened a tremendous amount of possibilities and doorways for some serious tweaks and mods. Siri, our favorite personal assistant, after using it for a good couple of months got a little boring, but thanks to the hardworking jailbreak developers, the utility of the said assistant has been pushed to a whole new level.
With tweaks for the 4S which allow users to change the color of Siri’s mic to giving the capability of making Siri launch native apps using the power of your voice, the untethered jailbreak is a must-have for users who are looking forward to get more from their iPhone than they paid for.
To jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1 untethered using Absinthe for Windows, simply follow our step by step guide posted here. Alternatively, you can use also use the iPhone Dev Team’s command line tool for jailbreaking on Windows and Mac both by following the steps posted here. But be advised; the tool has a bit of a learning curve, therefore we recommend that you stick to Absinthe due to simplicity.

For those of you who are sporting A4 devices, you can follow our complete step by step guide posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 untethered on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touch 3G/4G using Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze.

How To Jailbreak iPhone 4S, iPad 2 On Windows Using CLI Tool [Tutorial]

The jailbreak community welcomed the release of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak yesterday which was released in the form of a new Chronic Dev Team tool named ‘Absinthe’. At the point of release; the Mac OS X version was the only tool which had been packaged ready for distribution which left Windows users high and dry. Fortunately, the iPhone Dev Team had also produced a powerful Command Line Interface tool which was primarily designed to assist users with debugging and troubleshooting, but can also be used to perform the full jailbreak process.

The CLI tool has been released for the Windows operating system, and requires interaction from a command prompt. Carry on reading for a step by step guide on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 using this tool.
NOTE: Before you begin any jailbreak, it is always good house keeping to make a complete backup of your device which can be restored from in the event of any issues occurring. No problems are predicted, but the complexities of using a command line tool should be taken seriously. The following hardware and firmwares are supported in this jailbreak:
  • iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406)
  • iPad 2 WiFi/GSM/CDMA running iOS 5.0.1
Jailbreak Your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S With CLI Tool
Step 1: You will first of all need to download the compressed folder which holds all of the necessary files. You can download the ZIP file from here.
Step 2: The file you have downloaded will be named ‘cinject_0.4.3.zip’. Open that file up and extract the ‘cinject_0.4.3′ folder from within.
Step 3: Once the internal contents of the compressed file have been extracted, place them into a location on your computer, i.e. the desktop or the system’s C: drive.
Step 4: Connect your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 to the computer using the USB cable.
Step 5: After you have found a suitable location for the ‘cinject_0.4.3‘ folder, go to Start > and use the search function to search for Run then select it.
Step 6: A Run prompt will appear, in the box type in ‘cmd.exe‘ which will open up an instance of command prompt on your desktop.

Step 7: You will now need to change directory to the location of the ‘cinject_0.4.3‘ folder. For example, if you placed the folder onto your desktop then you would type the command ‘cd Desktop/cinject_0.4.3′ to get into that directory.

Step 8: The next stage is where the fun begins. Executing the command line interface tool and letting it work its magic. In the command prompt you will need to type ‘cinject –i payloads/jailbreak.mobileconfig’. On your device you will see a screen as shown below, tap on Install, just tap Next when it asks for a VPN password and then tap on Done.

Step 9: After the mobileconfig file has been run, the next step is to execute the payload. You do this by typing ‘cinject.exe -j payloads‘ which jailbreaks the device and points it in the direction of the required payloads.

Step 10: The penultimate step is run the ‘cinject.exe -w‘ command which watches the system log.

Step 11: Now on your iPhone 4S or iPad 2, go into Settings > General > Network, scroll down and go into VPN and toggle it ON. You should see ‘A configuration error occurred’ message, dismiss it by pressing OK. Let it do its thing, don’t be alarmed, at this point you’ll see an Apple logo on the screen and your device will reboot.

Step 12: After the above processes have completed, your device will have an ‘Absinthe’ icon, which looks just like any other application. Tap this icon and the jailbreak process will be completed. Some users are seeing the Cydia application directly after the ‘cinject.exe -w‘ command is executed so if that happens to you, you can then load Cydia right away.

Through the whole process, the command prompt that you are working in will display a lot of information as each command is executed. Some of this information may look erroneous, but it is perfectly normal. Refer to the ReadMe file which came bundled in the ‘cinject_0.4.3′ compressed file for more information.
If you are using a Mac OS X machine, you can follow or tutorial on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 using the Chronic Dev GUI Absinthe. For those of you who are sporting A4 devices, you can follow our complete step by step guide posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 untethered on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touch 3G/4G using Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze.

Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iOS 5.0.1 Is Finally Here Using Absinthe

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, stop what you are doing, go grab your A5 Apple device and prepare to receive the gift of liberation. For the last nine weeks all eyes have been firmly fixed on the individual blogs and Twitter accounts of the teams involved waiting patiently for day when the good news will appear.

Today is that day, as we are seeing the rollout of the new Chronic Dev Team tool, Absinthe. The initial release is for Mac OS X computers with the Windows and Linux version just waiting to be packaged before it can be given to the world. See below for a step by step guide on jailbreaking your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 using Absinthe.
Absinthe is a GUI tool which is intended to provide an untethered jailbreak for the following devices and firmwares:
  • iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406)
  • iPad 2 Wifi/GSM/CDMA running iOS 5.0.1

Absinthe iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak For iPhone 4S/iPad 2

NOTE: Please make sure you take a full back up of your device before beginning. The Absinthe program uses a new jailbreak technique, and although no problems are expected, the development teams waive any responsibility if anything does go wrong.
Step 1: Download the compressed Absinthe package. Extract all files and run the executable file. Download link in the end.
Step 2: Connect your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S to your Mac or Windows computer using a USB cable and launch the Absinthe tool and you will be presented with a GUI as shown below:

Step 3: You will notice a button on the right hand side of the Absinthe program which says ‘Jailbreak’. Once your device is connected, click that button to begin the process. What looks like a restore will begin on your device with the words ‘Restoring in Progress’ being present. Please do not touch the device, the process can be quite time consuming.

Step 4: Once the restore is completed, unlock your iPhone / iPad and look for the ‘Absinthe’ icon which will now be located on your device’s Springboard. Tapping the icon will momentarily launch the GreenPois0n website, before causing your device to reboot. After the reboot is completed, the aforementioned Absinthe icon will now be replaced by a beautiful brown Cydia one.

NOTE: If you are receiving an ‘Error establishing connection’ message at this stage, exit to your Springboard and be patient. The website servers are experiencing a tremendous increase in traffic so just keep trying to launch the Absinthe ‘app’. Alternatively, as a quick fix you can head over to the SETTINGS > GENERAL > NETWORK > VPN entry and then toggle VPN to ‘on’. This will cause an error message to be generated, which will reboot your device when dismissed. You can then launch the Absinthe icon again.
Step 5: The steps are all over. Your device is booted into a jailbroken state. You can now launch Cydia and follow through the process of setting up your favorite tweaks and extensions.
As you can see, the process has been made as simple as possible using this new powerful tool. The steps ands relatively easy and there isn’t much work involved, but remember to make that important back up.

iOS 5.0.1 being Run on iPhone 4S & Jailbroken iPad 2

The fight to jailbreak Apple's A5-chip-powered devices, specifically the iPhone 4S and the iPad, is nearing its end. Hacker "pod2g" and his crew of iOS exploit seekers have released photos and videos of a jailbroken iPhone 4S and a jailbroken iPad 2, both running iOS 5.0.1.
The most compelling proof that an A5 jailbreak is close comes in the form of a video from pod2g and the Chronic Dev Team (via iDownloadBlog). The jailbreak, performed on the iPhone 4S, is completely untethered and seems to be working great.

Backing up the show of the iPhone 4S, pod2g posted a photograph of a jailbroken iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1.

(Credit: pod2g)
Still, no official date has been mentioned for the public release of a jailbreak solution for A5 devices. The closest to a time frame we've seen has been pod2g's ominous blog note a couple days ago, "Only a few to wait now."
Are you a jailbreaker? What's your favorite non-Apple-sanctioned app? Let me know in the comments!

How to Set Up Multiple User Accounts on Your Jailbroken iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch

(Note - Please don't  try it for iPad, some users have reported to have some bugs)

As TechCrunch noted earlier today, a "guest mode" on your iPhone, or iPod touch would be a very useful feature. Fortunately for those of you who jailbreak, you can have that feature right now.
iUsers is a jailbreak tweak the will give you the ability to run multiple user accounts on your iDevice. It was designed for iPad, so it works properly there, but if you don't mind a few quirks you can still use it on an iPhone or iPod touch as well. To get it set up, just watch the video above or follow these steps:
How to Set Up Multiple User Accounts on Your Jailbroken iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch
  1. Open Cydia, tap the Manage tab, tapSources, then the Edit button, and finally the Add button. You'll get a window that starts you off with http:// to which you'll want to addcydia.blogeeks.com. (Note that there's only a single "g" in the URL.) Once you've got that in there, go ahead and add the new repository. Cydia will do its thing and reload itself, then ask you to return to Cydia.
  2. Tap the Search tab in Cydia and search for iUsers. When the results load, selectiUsers and install it. When it has finished installing you'll be asked to restart Springboard (your home screen app), which you should go ahead and do.
  3. After Springboard restarts the lock screen will come up and you'll be asked to set up multiple users before you can use it. Go ahead and set up your first user by following the on-screen prompts.
  4. When you're done, go into the Settings app on your home screen and look for the new iUsers tab. It should be about halfway down. Tap it and you'll be able to add additional users. This is where you can create a guest account.
  5. Once you've created all the users you want, lock your phone and try to unlock it. You'll see a little icon with people in it inside of the "slide to unlock" bar. Tap that and you'll be able to choose the account you want to use. (Note that on the iPhone and iPod touch there's a bit of a glitch that makes it hard to see the account names, but you can still select them. Watch the video above for help with this.)
That's all there is to it. Just perform the same user selection steps described above to switch back to your other account. Now you can have multiple users on your device, or just have a guest account when you don't want your friends getting into your data.

Watch Out for Fake Untethered iOS 5 Jailbreak Tools

We're all waiting eagerly for an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5, and word is that it's around the corner, but some ambitious scammers are out and about with a promise of an untethered jailbreak right now for a measly $25. Perhaps that price might be worth paying for a few impatient jailbreakers, but their solution—labeled FastRa1n—is just a fake. Most of you are savvy enough to spot this false solution, but we all let our guard down from time to time. Spread the word that there is not a true untethered jailbreak at this time.

iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak: Apple iOS 5 Users Urged to Avoid Scam Software

A newly released “FastRa1n” software tool claiming to offer an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 devices for a fee has been confirmed as a fake.

Upon the release of the “FastRa1n” many users of iOS 5 devices were fooled into paying the $25 fee for the software. However, the iPhone Dev Team, a site offering genuine and free jailbreaking and unlocking software for Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad, has confirmed that the FastRa1n tool is fake.
According to The International Business Times a representative from the iPhone Dev Team has come forward to explain that the software is fake and has urged iOS 5 users not to be fooled into paying the $25 fee or they could risk losing their money.
He added that a free and reliable version would be available soon and advised users to be patient.
It was reported last week that a tethered jailbreak was on offer for iOS 5 devices, and that this would allow Apple products to be jailbroken.
FastUnlockiPhone.com claims to offer this service, however, it is now thought the site is a fake.
The suspect site requires customers to pay $24.99 for an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak, called “FastRa1n v5.0.”
Usually authentic Jailbreaking for Apple devices has been made free in the past, and numerous online forums show advice stating that if somewhere is trying to charge for the service it is probably bogus.

SwitcherPlus Allows Multitasking Edits and Faster Killing of Apps on iPhone

BY

SwitcherPlus is a handy little jailbreak that makes multitasking easier on the iPhone. Not only can you multitask directly from your lock screen, but you can also quit backgrounded apps in bulk.

All you have to do to get this working is install SwitcherPlus from Cydia, restart Springboard (this should happen immediately after installation) and both features will be on by default. To activate multitasking from your lock screen, just double tap the home button. If you want to quit a bunch of apps, tap and hold one of them to entire "wiggle mode" like you normally would but tap the little arrow in the bottom-left corner instead. This will quit that app plus all the apps to its right. This way you can quickly clear out your multitasking queue and potentially earn yourself a little extra battery life.
