An AT&T executive let slip that Apple's iPhone 5 may launch in early October. That's also when the Google Nexus Prime is expected.

Though many an analyst has predicted September as the probable launch period for the iPhone 5, it looks increasingly likely that the new handset will makes its debut in October.
Today, we can thank an AT&T executive for tipping Apple's hand yet again. According to a source cited by BGR.com, AT&T's management has warned employees about a busy period coming up. An AT&T vice president confirmed to employees that Apple will kick off iPhone 5 sales in early October.
"Expect things to get really, really busy in the next 35-50 days, so prepare your teams accordingly," said the exec to a group of AT&T managers.
Is this concrete proof that the Apple iPhone 5 will in fact launch in early October? No. But it is one more piece of the puzzle, and makes things much more interesting, especially when you consider the next tidbit.
Google's Android platform needs a new Nexus device. Reports have suggested for months that the next Nexus device will be called the Nexus Prime, and will run Android 4.0, known colloquially as Ice Cream Sandwich.
The Nexus Prime is expected to be manufactured by Samsung. It will include a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED HD display at 1280 x 720 resolution and will likely sport a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.
Google has said that Ice Cream Sandwich should debut this fall. Google will need a new device on which to show off this major revision to the Android platform. What better device than something akin to the Nexus Prime?
Just think. The best (we assume) iPhone from Apple would be going head-to-head in the smartphone market against the best from Google and Samsung.
If both handsets really do become available in October, prepare yourself for to-the-minute reports of which handset is selling faster than the other. Which company will win? Apple and its iOS-based iPhone, or Google and its Android-based Nexus Prime?
It will be truly exciting to watch the battle unfold in the U.S. and beyond, as today's top two smartphone platforms duke it out for the ultimate title.
If this isn't enough excitement for you, don't forget that Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Mango update is set to debut this fall on new smartphones, too. What role will it play in this skirmish?
Only time will tell.
