Apps To Enjoy The Drinks

While I usually list serious iPhone apps or games, this time around, I have decided to come up with a listing of apps for those of you who like to drive away your worries and enjoy a few drinks. With the weekend just around the corner, I think that this is the perfect time for this article.

Wine Enthusiast Guide

Price: $4.99 (Rs 225 approx)
Current Version: 1.5
Size: 1.7 MB
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later

As the name suggests, this is an app for the wine enthusiast and it is like no other app in the app store. This app serves as an expert advisor, allowing you to choose, manage, and enjoy wine the way it is meant to be. Indeed, it has experts' research of over 20 years from over 1,00,000 authoritative reviews written at Wine Enthusiast Magazine, all put into one very informative app at your fingertips. Around a thousand reviews are added each month to enrich this already rich app. Data about old as well as new wines is available and there is live data access for the latest information.

The Guide section is pretty much like an encyclopaedia of wines, where you can find just about anything related to topic. It includes over 20 illustrated tutorials with links to online content. There is a Search section in which you can set the price, rating, style, varietal, and region to narrow down the search for the wine of your choice. The section has Cellar Selection, Best Buy, and Editor's Choice sections to narrow down your search even further. Also worth checking is the Vintage section where you will find chronological information about wines since the past 17 years. If you are a wine lover, this is arguably the most definite guide you will not regret putting your money on.

Mixology

Price: Free
Current Version: 2.3.5
Size: 12.6 MB
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1.3 or later

While Mixology is touted to be the ultimate drink recipe and bartending guide, you don't necessarily have to be one to use this app. This app contains a treasure of recipes to prepare just about any cocktail in the world. With over 7,900 drink recipes made using 1,300 ingredients, the possibilities become endless. There are different drink categories including Cocktails, Martinis, Shooters, Jello Shots, Hot Drinks, Punches, Non-Alcoholic, and Favorites.

In case, you have a few liquor and mixer types, you can enter their names in the Liquor Cabinet feature and it will find out and inform you about all the cocktails you can make out of them. If you are having trouble deciding, there is a Random section with a slot machine interface, which picks up a random recipe based on the liquor, mixer, and even glassware criteria.

Aspiring bartenders will find this app interesting and educational because it contains valuable bartending terminology and techniques. There is even an option to watch video tutorials streamed from the web. It even allows you to share the recipes with your friends via email, Twitter, and Facebook. If you are too lazy to prepare the cocktail, then the Bar/Liquor Locator feature finds out liquor stores and bars nearby using maps and GPS, but this feature only works in the US at present.

Apps For Safe Drinking

After all that drinking, you might be better off with a little help. Here are a few apps to help you enjoy your drinks and also be safe.

Liquor Log

Price: $1.99 (Rs 90 approx)
Current Version: 1.1.1
Size: 4.2 MB
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1.2 or later
Download from the App Store.

The aim of Liquor Log is to help you keep track of your consumption and help decide when you've had enough. With a simple and easy to use interface, this app creates a detailed diary of your consumption and records your drinking habits with options to enter the type of beverage. In addition to calculating your blood alcohol level (BAC), it provides you statistics of your consumption. It features a large round yellow "TAXI" button in the Call a Cab tab, to simply press the button to call a cab in case you are not in a position of entering a number. This app is worth a try for $ 1.99 (Rs 90 approx.)

AlcoholMeter
Price: $0.99 (Rs 45 approx)
Current Version: 3.1
Size: 8.4 MB
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.
Download from the App Store.

AlcoholMeter calculates the BAC for you. It informs you about the time in which you will reach a concentration of 0.0%, which means you will be safe. It also provides you with the statistics by country of the allowed BAC level. All you need to enter is your weight, sex, type of drinks consumed, and the time elapsed since the first drink. The app claims that the calculated BAC levels are only rough estimates, because this level depends on several other factors as well. Nevertheless, this is a handy app. Remember, it always advisable to drink responsibly and do not drink and drive, because no app can help you if you don't follow this advice.

Calculateur du taux d'alcoolemie Educ'alcool
Current Version: 1.2
Size: 2.4 MB
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later.
Download from the App Store.

I found this app as I was about to wrap up this article. Although it seems to be French, this Canadian app also has an English interface. The name translates to Blood alcohol level calculator for educational purpose. This simple and practical application calculates the BAC based on the amount of alcohol consumed. It enables the user to make informed decisions to consume and act responsibly. With the information you enter, it charts a graph showing the blood alcohol level against time. You can find out the estimated time required for blood alcohol level to reach legal limit using this graph.

A record of your consumption habits is maintained so that you can refer to it later. It also provides you with information about transportation services to take you home, although these are currently available only for Canada. That being said, the app is still a valuable tool and the best thing about it is that it is free.
