Apple, which announced record earnings Tuesday on sales of iPhones, today releases Lion, a major upgrade to its operating system for Mac computers.

Some 9.25 million iPad 2s were sold in the second quarter, up 183% from a year-ago. Apple has struggled to keep up with demand for the tablet computers because of parts shortages.

Most of Apple's growth in its fiscal third quarter came courtesy of worldwide sales of 20.3 million iPhones, up 142% from the year-ago quarter. The company, which is widely expected to unveil another iPhone in September, declined to comment on that. But Tim Cook, Apple chief operating officer, offered a cryptic comment about it, saying, "We have a future product transition that we won't talk about today."

Apple says the strong sales performance of the iPhone was largely due to its growing popularity in the Middle East, China, Brazil and Mexico.

Apple reported its net income soared 125% to $7.3 billion on $28.6 billion in revenue.

"We added 42 new carriers in 15 new countries, bringing us over 100 countries for the iPhone now," Cook said in a conference call with analysts. "This is great for Apple. These are markets where Apple hasn't been as strong … and we're beginning to see the fruits of our labor."

Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray, says the emerging markets numbers are "surprising — I wouldn't have expected them to be as big as they are. People will really spend there." In places such as Brazil, the iPhone sells for about $900.

Beyond the iPhone, Apple sold some 3.95 million Macintosh computers, up 14%, and had huge sales for the hard-to-get iPad 2, which launched in late March. Some 9.25 million iPad 2s were sold in the quarter, up 183% from the year-ago quarter. Apple has struggled to keep up with demand for the tablet computers because of parts shortages.

The iPod music players continued their decline, falling 20% with sales of 7.5 million units.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who has been out on indefinite medical leave since the beginning of the year, wasn't on the call with analysts but remains involved in major product decisions.

The topic of an eventual successor to Jobs, which is the subject of much public speculation, did not come up during the call.

Munster says Apple continues to have record quarters because it's tapped into today's tech consumer. "They don't want just a computer anymore, they want a computer in their pocket."
