Lookout for iPhone
The well-known Lookout Mobile Security protects Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile devices against malware, theft, and loss of data. The company's new Lookout for iPhone (free) focuses on security necessities for the iPhone, so it's a completely different product. To start, Lookout for iPhone doesn't bother with an anti-malware component. Android malware is a large and growing problem, while iPhone malware hardly exists.
Find a Missing DeviceLosing your iPhone can be a traumatic experience, so Lookout for iPhone will help you find a missing device. At any time you can log into Lookout's Web portal (the same one used by Lookout Mobile Security) to view a map with the device's current location. If the portal indicates that the phone is nearby, you can turn on the screamer feature. Even if the phone is off or the volume turned way down it will blast out a loud noise to help you find it.
McAfee WaveSecure iOS Edition, Norton Mobile Security Lite, and many others let you lock the phone remotely, to keep a thief from accessing your data. Kaspersky Mobile Security 9, Webroot Mobile Security for Android, Lookout Mobile Security, and quite a few others go a step further and let you remotely wipe the phone. The free Lookout for iPhone doesn't include this kind of full-blown antitheft and device recovery. It focuses on recovering a device that's simply missing, not stolen.
Backup for ContactsLike Mobile Superhero, Snuko Anti-Theft For Mobiles, and many others, Lookout for iPhone will back up your contacts online. Unlike most of the competition, Lookout does this job in the background and automatically stays up to date as you add new contacts.
You can restore your backed-up contacts to a new phone if necessary. It's even possible to restore contacts to an Android device, as long as it's running Lookout Mobile Security.
iPhone-Specific SecurityAccording to a presenter at the Black Hat conference this summer, jailbreaking an iPhone makes its security level about equivalent to an Android device. The System Advisor in Lookout for iPhone warns if it finds that the phone is jailbroken, or if it doesn't have the latest operating system updates installed.
Apple came under fire this past spring due to privacy concerns about location services. Lookout for iPhone reports on the status of location services and explains how to turn the system on or off, either globally or for individual applications.
When you're on an unsecured wireless network your network traffic could be intercepted. If you've connected with this network before, your phone will connect again silently when it comes within range. When Lookout detects an unsecured network it warns the user to avoid entering any sensitive information unless the browser's lock icon indicates a secure connection.
Lookout for iPhone is currently available for free in the iPhone App Store.
